Try Forbes Market, at the corner of Woodward Ave and Forbes Ave in New Haven, Connecticut. They were voted the No# 1 cheesesteak in the greater New Haven area. I have had plenty of them. Its a big (about 16 incher) one. They use half a large hoagie roll, load on the steak and cheese and will put on peppers, onions or mushrooms if you want. At $4.50 a sandwich, incidently it weighs probably 1+1/2 - 2lbs fully loaded, its a great cheese and grease dripping artery-clogger! I can't say that it would beat a genuine South Philly cheesesteak but its a damn good attempt for around here.
When I go down to Philly I usually head down to the Italian Market to the vendors to grab a good steak. Wish i could remember the name of the guy I stick to.
