LEBANON STREET MARKET

298 Lebanon St. Malden, MA 02148 (781) 388-9066/ (781) 324-9251
You can probably guess from the name that this is a neighborhood store, one which unfortunately has no seating but has the best cheesesteak you'll find in New England, and it's about 10 minutes from Boston. Go at lunchtime & you'll run into all the contractors, firemen & other blue collar, hungry boys 'n girls-usually a good indicator that the food is good. Not a purists' philly cheesesteak (they use a fresh twist seeded roll) all the sandwiches are overstuffed & made to order, the cheesesteak is mound of succulent steak, brimming with just the right amount of grease & juices, smothered with choice of white american or provolone (sorry, no cheez whiz, but you can always ask!). BTW, we did make it to a few of the places listed on your site, and here's what we thought-
Jim's (4th & South)-cool atmosphere, more social dining than great sandwich, kind of cheap with the portions (probably b/c of all the movie starlets who dine there complaining they can't finish). Larry's (by St. Joseph's)...Belly Filler fed 2 people, quality seemed better than Jim's. If you are up here & looking for a sandwich that big (locally, a 'spuckie'), you can fight thru Big Dig traffic & on the far end of Broad St in Downtown Boston is a place called Al Capone's-never had the steak there, but anything I've ever tried is HUGE, delicious and cheap-1/3 pizza (considered a slice!) ~$1.50, subs no more than $5, and fresh prepared pasta with choice of sauce & toppings sold by the pound, ex Baked Ziti, Ravioli, etc. ~$4/lb Anyway, if you're up here & jonesing some good steak, check out Maplewood-you won't be disappointed :-)

LEO'S HOUSE OF PIZZA

Newburyport, MA
Leo's House of Pizza in Newburyport has great cheese steaks (comparatively speaking). It is located at the rotary (3 traffic circle -if you take State Street away from the water, towards Rowley you will run into the circle).

QUICKIES

Locations in Springfield, West Springfield, Chicopee, Ma.
There's a small chain of take-out places here in the area around Springfield, Massachusetts that has the best, authentic Philly Cheesesteaks I've found anywhere in New England. The name of the chain is Quickies and they've won numerous readers' choice awards for their food in the annual "best of" issues of the local weekly entertainment newspaper. They also have Buffalo wings, Ribs, and BBQ chicken as well as all kinds of "subs" (forgive them for they know not the holy word "Hoagie") and other sandwiches.

SANDWICH KING

361 Bridge St., Lowell, MA 01850 (978) 452-7967
I've had Jim's and Geno's in South Philly before, but unfortunately I'm from Lowell, Massachusetts sneaking down to Philly for a cheesesteak would put a dent in the bank account. Instead I head over to Sandwhich King on Bridge St. a little mom and pop place for a large cheesesteak with fried onions for only four dollars. Now that's the best deal in town!
