LEO'S

1403 Chester Pike, Folcroft, PA; ph)-610-586-1199
So I'm sitting on the beach in Ocean City, MD with a fresh copy of the Best of Philly. Being from the Far Northeast, I've been searching a long time in Delaware County for a respectable cheesesteak. and suddenly, right there in front of me, under Best cheesesteak is Leo's, about six minutes from my house. Now mind you, dieting keeps me from enjoying beef on a regular basis, but I am on vacation. So, the day I get back (today), I hop on over to see if the fuss is for real. I still can't believe how much beef was on that roll. Can I tell you, not only was the best I've ever had, it's cheap for all that beef. I'm sold! When it's time to splurge, I'll be at Leo's! Great job, guys!
Submitted by Steve Smith (sesmith5@juno.com), August 3, 1997

Leo's is the best cheesesteak I have ever had. Every time I travel anywhere near Philly on I-95, I insist on getting off the 420 North exit and visiting Leo's. A large is about $9.00 and is about 18 inches long. I have tried to finish a whole large but have yet to succeed. The steak is fresh, and the quantity extremely generous. I prefer the Cheesesteak Hoagie, which has lettuce and tomatoes on it. I order mine with extra cheese and sweet peppers. Although I live outside the area, the folks at Leo's always remember me due to the huge orders I usually take back home to Northern Virginia for all of my friends, as well as the mandatory stop before every Eagles game I attend at the Vet. They make great Strombolis too. I have to award Leo's a solid "10", as I have never had one better! Note: I'm not affiliated in any way with Leo's, I'm just an extremely satisfied customer.

I agree, Leo's is the best!

OK, let's set the record straight here. Leo's on Chester Pike is second to none. Just last week I drove all the way to Leo's with my girlfriend and my folks, and we spent the day in Philly. Let me tell you, if I could open a steak shop like this in Virginia, I'd make a mint. I found out about Leo's from a friend who took me there when we went to a Flyers game this year, and I just can't believe how hooked I am. Well worth the 2.5 hour drive up I-95! I challenge anyone to finish a whole large!

Hey, Love the site. Lifelong resident of Del. County (the area around Leo's), and have been eating steaks my whole life. The earliest steaks I remember were from Leo's. My dad knew Leo, and took me there from the time when their old shop first opened in the 70's. The shop used to be in this tiny building across the street from where they are now. I LOVE CHEESESTEAKS. Thanks For Reading, Mike

Campos Deli is by far the best cheesesteak in center city Philadelphia. There is no need to go to South Philly when right here downtown you get high quality beef, made fresh per order on a fresh daily South Philly Sarcones Bakery roll...what more can you ask for? If you live in the city they also provide steak and hoagie delivery, their philly hoagies are the real thing. Last year when I lived in San Diego with my mother for a short period I was glad to discover that they ship philly cheeseteaks, you can actually buy philly cheesesteaks online at their web site, as well as their fresh local philadelpia pretzels by mail. CC PEPPER'S

State College, PA, multiple locations
Like all true people from Philly, I crave a very good cheesesteak. However, for 7 months out of the year, I live in State College since I attend Penn State. I have live there for 2 years and have yet to find a good cheesesteak up there. CC Peppers, in my opinion, have horrible cheesesteaks. I remember the first time I went there and told them what I wanted. I just wanted a cheesesteak with extra American cheese and mushrooms. They asked me if I wanted "Philly sauce" on my cheesesteak.I said what is Philly sauce. The guy said it was tomato sauce like they use down in the Philadelphia area. I told him that I am from the philadelphia are and that we call that a pizza steak. He acted like all cheesesteaks come with sauce, green peppers and onions. Trust me, CC Peppers are lousy. That is why I try to come home every other week to get a cheesesteak.
Submitted by Tom Cretella (TCretella@aol.com), August 2, 1997

Having attended Penn State, I can tell you that CC Pepper's makes the best cheesesteak in State College. They aren't in the class of the true Philly shops, but they're as good as it gets in Central Pa. The portions aren't as large as a Philly native would like, but the ingredients are fresh and the sandwich tastes good. Even the rolls are impressive, though clearly short of Amoroso's status. You can order with fried onions and mushrooms or with lettuce and tomatoes like a cheesesteak hoagie, which for some reason is called a "California cheesesteak" (what an oxymoron!) In any case, when in town to see the Nittany Lions, just ask anyone where the nearest CC's is, it's as good a steak as you'll find in Happy Valley, and I like 'em.

I don't know how often you update the site, but I excepted that someone would have written about the "Best of Philly" Cheesesteak 2004. I went to Cosmi's Deli around mid-October to taste the touted sandwich - actually it was my to be first Philly Cheesesteak! I was not disappointed. The thin strips were juicy, but not runny. The roll held up to the task of withholding the juice without becoming soggy. Although not a fan of American Cheese, it complemented the steak well. I wrote a little story about my trip to Cosmi's on my blog Minor Gourmandry. Check out the post here.

DALESSANDRO'S STEAKS

Henry Av & Wendover St., Roxborough, Philadelphia ph.-(215)-482-5407
READER'S CHOICE! - Editor's note: I've received more positive E-mails on Dalessandro's than any other place. Nobody seems to be able to spell it, but everyone agrees that the steaks are superb.

My favorite place is called D'Allessandro's in Roxborough (on Henry Avenue, right near the public golf course). Fabulously fresh rolls, huge sandwich, brimming with chopped meat, oinions cooked to perfection.. .. Don't remember the prices, but it was average (between 4.50 and 5.00 for a big ole sammich.) PLUS, it's easy as hell to park around there!
My fave way? Hmmmm... depends. If I haven't had my vegetables for the week, I'll bust out a cheesesteak hoagie lettuce, tomato, raw onions, ketchup and mayo... a feast fit for a king. Usually, I go au naturale with minimal toppings just Reagan's fave veggie, ketchup.

There is no question that D'Allessandro's Cheesesteaks in Roxborough are the finest in the world. They are inexpensive. They are best with fried onions and a thin tomato sauce. The rolls are fresh, The cheese is melted american. I travel from West Chester just to get them. The best So. Philly Cheese steaks with Cheese Wheez are Geno's across from Pat's, but these do not compare to Dellasandro's.

John: I have lived in PHL all my life and consider a good cheesesteak a true delicacy. some of the best I have found in the PHL area is D'Alessandro's on Ridge Ave. Not only are the steaks great, but if you have some of the home made roasted peppers, it is difficult to see straight when you eyes roll back into your head.
Pat's in S. Philly is probably the highest overrated sandwich in the city.

This is Falone's, on Elmwood Avenue near the intersection of Island Avenue in southwest Philly. First-rate pepper cheesesteaks, very large and at a good price. Interesting ambience here too (this is important to me) with various vagrants (completely harmless and non-threatening) wandering in and out, seemingly well- known by the regulars and cheerfully greeted by the workers. A no-frills place for sure, and a wonderful place to eat. Thanks for the great website, although I note it doesn't seem to have added updated critiques lately. GARRET HILL PIZZA

Rosemont, PA
For my money, the best cheesesteak in the Philly suburbs is at Garrett Hill Pizza in Rosemont, PA. An important element in a cheesesteak made with Provolone or American is that they mix the cheese in with the steak while cooking it up -- they do that at Garrett Hill. We've always found the rolls to be fresh and the steaks piping hot. They have a great selection of steaks and fixin's. Highly recommend for those in the area.

#1(tie) When you're in South Philly, and yes if you're checking out a game at the Vet you're in South Philly. You have to have a steak at Geno's!! The meat is cut thick, the cheese is always fresh, the rolls are perfecto. One thing... You gotta order it right or it's like the Soup Nazi, "no soup for you!" Order it like this.... Your cheese (Provolone, American, Whiz (cheez whiz) and with or without (onions) and you can get sauce with it as well. For example: "Provolone without" Provolone cheese steak without onions. Important note: It's open late. You're on Delaware AV clubbing you have to hit Geno's.

I grew up in Philly and lived in center city for 6 1/2 years. The best cheesesteak I ever had was at Ishkabibles. My husband is from North Carolina, where they go to Subway for a "hoagie". When we first started dating, he would call me a snob because I wouldn't eat certain foods anywhere but Philly. One weekend he came to visit me in Philly and we went to Ishkabibles. JIM'S PLACE

416 Wanamaker Ave., Essington PH.(610)-521-6871
"Home of the Heavyweight"
A 'must' stop when visiting Philadelphia and/or the 'burbs is Jim's Place, conveniently located just off the 420 South exit of I-95 in Essington. It is a traditional Philly corner store front, needing fresh paint and better parking, however, step inside and you will find a friendly staff and a cheese steak menu boasting several combinations that this connoisseur has not seen before. After much discussion and consideration on what to try, I went for the BBQ cheese steak and added mushrooms -- a contemporary choice that pleased the palate. Noticing the non-Amoroso's bread boxes above the freezer case, my initial bread bias was soon forgotten as the Buono Bros. bread tasted bakery fresh, soft inside with a slight crunch outside; the BBQ sauce was sweet and thick; the American cheese and mushrooms were plentiful and grilled simultaneously with the steak so bite after bite had a taste of each; and the steak quality was very good (recommendation: chop the steak into smaller pieces when on the grill), and the quantity filled the entire roll. I enjoyed seeing the picture of Air Force One and reading the caption and was remiss there were not Eagles, Flyers or 76'ers memorabilia. No matter, the BBQ cheese steak is a keeper and the Old Bay freedom fries were top shelf!

Looking forward to my return to Jim's Place to try a Southwestern Border Steak.

JIM'S STEAKS

4th and South Street - South Street, Philadelphia ph.- (215)928-1911
Look, the absolute BEST cheesesteaks in Philadelphia are at Jim's Steaks in the 500 block of South Street, Philadelphia. I have entertained visitors from as far away as Perth, Australia, who've heard about Philly cheesesteaks, and I always take them to Jim's and they are NEVER disappointed! A large cheesesteak runs around $5. The place is always packed, sometimes with a forty-foot line out the door. You can get a steak with provolone cheese, but regulars and locals get it with "Cheez Wiz" at Jim's (a polite way of not infringing on the trademark of the makers of Cheez Whiz} and it is DELICIOUS! Fried onions are also a must. The place is tiled floors and ceiling, like a giant men's room, but the walls are adorned with autographed photos of famous Philadelphians who've frequented Jim's Steaks -- from former mayor Frank Rizzo to D.J. Hy Lit to several well-known Mafiosi. They use real shaved sirloin (at least it sure looks like they do), the best rolls from a local Italian bakery delivered fresh every day, and they are FAST -- they have to be, because the place is jammed all the time! NO, I DON'T work there -- but I sure wish I did! When I was in my early 20's and living in a $150-a-month fourth-floor walkup apartment at the corner of Ninth and South, I was frequently broke and hungry -- but standing underneath the big exhaust fan on the front wall of Jim's was the closest thing to a real meal a starving young guy could get. Now that I'm older and can afford to eat three meals a day, I've moved north of the city to Bucks County -- but I still get to Jim's at least once a month for one of their fabulous cheesesteaks! One final accolade: I entertained a client from San Francisco who wanted to sample a "Philadelphia Cheesesteak" at Jim's Steaks for lunch a few hours before he had to catch his flight back to the West Coast. After he finished his meal, he went back to the counter, ordered TWENTY steaks with fried onions and Cheez Wiz, and put them in his carry-on luggage to take back to San Francisco!

I'm perusing the cheesesteak page and I must say that Jim's Steaks at 4th & South is the be all end all of Philly Cheesesteaks. When I was a kid growing up in So. Philly, one of my best memories is of my pop taking me to Jim's after a movie. Jim's also has a fine selection of domestic and imported beers.

JIM'S STEAKS

63rd & Callowhill, West Philly
the best steak place in philly is Jim's Steaks. not the one on south street but the one at 63rd and callowhill in west philly. down near st joes and belmont ave. they don't mess around here. open all night, the hot sauce is great (better than geno's). the attitude is great, you better know what you want or you're gonna get an earful from the ladies behind the counter. go there and you're not gonna be disappointed. my selection: extra cheese, mushrooms, hot sauce, without. i'm not a big fan of fried onions, but i love shrooms on my steak.

Hands down the best in Philly is Jim's at 62nd & Nobel (no not at 4th &South). I've been going there for 21 or my 27 years. My dad was the first person to take me there and his dad was the first to take him. Cheesesteak with fried onions......simple and phenomenal. For the past 10 years I've lived in the metro DC area......on more than one occasion, I've road tripped to Philly, gone to Jim's, had a cheesesteak (or two), read the Daily News sports section, turned around and driven home. Given the choice of eating at any of the finest restaurants in the world.....a Jim's cheesesteak still comes out on top.

JOHN'S PIZZA

Frazer, PA
I'm a native Philadelphian with a keen sense for good cheesesteaks. In my opinion, the best Philly Cheesesteaks are not actually in Philadelphia, but rather the suburb of Frazer. John's Pizza makes about the finest (if not largest) cheesesteak around. Conde Naste Traveler magazine agrees in an article written sometime last year. Well worth the trip if you're in the area. John's is run entirely by family and has a large selection of terrific italian sandwiches and pizza.

Hey, we were in Philly 2 years ago and were told by a couple of guys working on the roads for the city to try this place called " The Shack ". The actual name of the place is John's Roast Pork. It is on Weccaoe and Snyder in an industrial area. We go back every year. What a great sandwich. I do not know how it compares to others because we always end up there. Just a little shack that is always packed. Open Mon to Fri. Closed on weekends. Let me know what you think. Great web site. We are from Long Island. Thanks.

LARRY'S CHEESESTEAKS

2457 N. 54th St., Philadelphia, PA PH-(215) 879-1776
I must agree with some users when they say geno's and pat's steaks are overrated. You'll eat anything at 3 in the morning. I have to admit that Jim's on south street are pretty damn good. Anyway, i want to endorse my favorite, Larry's on 54th and City. I grew up in Wynfield. For those of you who don't know, it's the neighborhood surrounding St. Joes. Anyway, since i was about 7 i remember having a Larry's cheesesteak. It was delicious. the steak was delicious, the cheese was melted perfectly, the onions were just right, and it's something about Amoroso's rolls that perfect a cheese steak. And one of the best reasons why Larry's is one of the best is the fact that you can see them cooking through there window on the street. so you know they're not doing anything dirty. If you attempt to eat a Bellyfiller, you won't have to eat for 3 days. Every time my family come to visit, it's mandatory that they stop at Larry's. I attended Roman Catholic high school and i have friends from all around Philly and their favorite places cannot compare. And before I go, Dellasandro's or whatever, is not the best, these people need to travel a little more.

A Larry's cheesesteak is undoubtedly the best in Philly!!! I wholeheartedly agree with the observation about it having enough grease to make it really good, but what makes it stand above Geno's and Pat's(trite tourist traps, I assure you) is that Larry's grinds the meat up(Jim's is close, but no cigar). The other place just shove in slabs of beef and that makes it too chewy and you sometimes need a knife! And that weak Cheese Whiz those two use-ugh! You need real cheese not that yellow mess! I grew up in West Philly, moved to Haverford and then to Bala Cynwyd right across City Ave. Do you know how cool it was to be able to walk to Larry's? My girlfriend and I went there every Friday- and even now we'll drive 20-30 minutes to go there. I'm a Philly native born and raised for 29 years and I've had them all Just driving by and seeing the gang at the grill in the window will make your mouth water. Don't just take my word for it-I bring all my friend's from out of town to all of them and they choose Larry's every time. And don't forget, their fries and onion rings kick butt too!!! It's the whole package. One more thing-whoever wrote that comment about the Ardmore Wawa grill closing must be living my life. That used to be a staple for my gang getting home from the Black Banana or Asylum at 4:00am after Larry's closed. Trudy on the late shift there made some mean sandwiches, so if she's reading this -We miss you!!! Daryl

The best? Larry's at 54 and City Line. Why? Because cheese steaks have to have grease - a lot of grease; and they have to have the grease dripping out off the sandwich when you eat it - and this one does! And when you're really hungry try the bellyfiller. It's big enough for four. Submitted by Will (WillyJ2714@aol.com, Aug. 21, 1997

Reading about Larry's "Home of the Bellyfiller" almost brought tears to my eyes! We used to hit the old Larry's at 60th and Lancaster for the best cheesesteaks we ever had, and a bellyfiller that couldn't be finished. Good to see that they're still around. Went to a pizza shop in Haverford the other day (across from the Acme market, down from the Jaguar dealer) and had a cheesesteak that brought back the old days. Nothing gourmet, just good bread, steak, provolone cheese, and onions. Maybe an alternative for those left homeless when the Wawa in Ardmore shut downa their grill. By the way, living here in Iowa I've learned that the key to a good steak sandwich (and a hoagie) is the Amoroso rolls that don't get distributed much out of the Philly area. Does anyone know if they can be mail ordered? --William (Iowa City)

Several years ago (about 11) I visited Philly with a native. He took me to a place across the street from St. Joseph's U. and fed me the best Cheese Steak I have ever consumed. I wanted to buy several and freeze them for later use. Now 11 years later and living in Hong Kong, I still remember that great meal. Can't remember the name of the place and the location may not be of much help for you to help me get the name. Art (my friend) said the place had been there for years. Haven't found a good cheese steak here.

LITTLE MAN'S DELI

633 S. Walnut St., West Chester, PA PH-(610) 696-2734
Little Man's Deli makes a Cheesesteak Stromboli that could go head to head with any Philly steak. Essentially a pizza folded over on itself before baking, the stromboli has nice soft crust and stays moist inside. It comes in small, medium and large, and the small is larger than any single cheesesteak sandwich. A large could feed three hungry people. Ask for sauce and onions, and get your fork and knife ready! "Biggest and the Best" is an understatement when you talk about Lorenzo Steaks and Hoagies in West Chester. A ton of meat, etc. On their hoagies, there has to be at least a pound of meat/cheese, you have to go there. I got so frustrated, moved to Orlando, NO ONE knows how to make a cheesesteak there!!!! Every time I would come back to PA, my first stop was to find a cheesesteak! I just moved back to PA, and have already had my 1st one!!!!!!!

If you live in the Reading area the only place that can come close is Mama Rosa's on Lancaster Ave in Shillington...I've tried them all up here and they all suck...if Rosa's would offer whiz they could hang with the big boys...interestingly the people who run Rosa's had a steak shop near the Adam's Mark some years back so they know what their doing.
Biggest frustration when ordering a Cheesesteak outside of Philly... A cheesesteak DOES NOT HAVE SAUCE ON IT! If I wanted a pizza steak I would have ordered one!

MAMA'S PIZZERIA

426 Belmont Ave., Bala Cynwyd, PA PH:(610) 664-4757
Even now, 13 years after moving out of the area, Mama's ranks highest on my cheesesteak list. From Columbia Maryland, to Allentown, Pennsylvania to Saldotna, Alaska, to Palm Coast Florida, THEY ARE STILL THE BEST! When I was 10, 11 12 years it was the Friday night tradition for us to have Mama's Pizza and cheesesteaks (and watch the Love Boat and Fantasy Island - age not important since it's the consistent quality and standards of the restaurant that are under discussion). Whenever I have the opportunity to visit the city I DO NOT pass up the opportunity to grab a couple of cheesesteaks from Mama's. And whenever cheesesteaks are discussed (inevitable when talking about Philly) I always recommend Mama's as the real thing!

I've been a serious cheesesteak eater for about 15 years now and have eaten at all the main cheesesteak shops in and around the Phillly area. Mama's Pizzeria is hands down the best in da business! For the same price as Pat's or Geno's, the so called "Best of Philly", you get twice as much sandwich and unparalleled quality. Everything is as fresh as can be. The bread is perfect for a cheesesteak, very huge, crispy on the outside, and so soft and fresh on the inside and wow......... how do they fit so much meat and cheese in one sandwich? You'll need a fork just to pick up all the meat, onions, and cheese that's gonna eventually pile up on your plate. Mushrooms don't hurt either, and they're fresh too; not like the others. I eat about two of these bad boys a month. If you happen to be on or near I-76 in Philly, you gotta take the Belmont Ave exit. I promise you will not be dissapointed, you will agree Mama's is da best!
Submitted by Fast Eddie, March 22, 2004

I found Mamas about 6 years ago, and i have yet to eat a whole sandwich in one sitting. I think it is the mix of cheeses that are cooked up right along with the fresh meat that make the steak so good. Or maybe it is the roll. Either way, don't plan anything strenuous to do after eating one. You will want to lounge around for a few days after downing one of these big boys. I once asked one of the waitresses what made the steaks so good, and she said, "I have been working here for 5 years, and they trust me with everything, including all the money; But they will not let me cook the steaks. Only family does that." Thank God.

I've been to most of the places on your page, but I HANDS DOWN recommend Mama's Pizzeria located on 425 Belmont Ave., Bala Cynwyd, PA. It's just off of the ever more yuppified Main St. in Manayunk, however Mama's has been there since the days when people tried to avoid Manayunk at all costs.

The stats: the biggest, heaviest, freshest, cheesiest steak in Philly (which means the world). A cheesesteak with mushrooms (my personal favorite) runs about $6.00. Sounds expensive? Wait until you see it. I don't recommend trying to eat a whole one yourself, but the steaks are so good that you'll try none-the-less. They always serve FRESH mushrooms and bread. (Note: Only Philadelphians understand and appreciate the importance of good bread in the making of any type of sandwich.) Always plenty of FREE parking. Never hard to get a table. Waitresses.

The negatives: I'll be honest. There are some. If I were to just rave about a place that you've never heard of before, would you seriously consider me? First: The place is only open Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat. They also seem to close around most holidays (when your Out-of town friends are most likely to visit). The decor is very clean, more like a restaurant than sandwich shop, however is adorned with a clown motif. --Hey, if you come for a steak, what the hell do you care about clowns on the wall? The only serious criticism: There's ALOT of cheese on the cheesesteaks, too much for some. If you are into cheese, this is nirvana. Personally, I am lactose intolerant, but I can't live without my Mama's mushroom cheesesteak one a month (it takes about that long to fully digest one.)

The other joints: Jims: can you take any steak place seriously when it's full with tourists who smother the steak in Cheese Whiz? Steve's Prince: WAY EXPENSIVE for what you get. Dellsandros: garden-variety good steak, but not at that top realm. Geno's & Pat's: I just love when people claim this to be the best. It's emphatically the WORST. (I say "it" because to me the both are indistinguishable.) Its only saving grace is that it is open all night and anything tastes great when you're stoned. Tony Lukes: steaks are very good, but you've GOT to order the pork sandwich when you're there. It is reason enough to convert from Orthodox Judaism.

Hope I didn't tread on too many toes with my opinion. But it's just that - an opinion---and you asked for it :)

See you at Mama's

MALLORY'S

Rt. 30 in Bryn Mawr.
I lived downtown for 13 years and just recently moved out to the main line. Since my job takes me west as well as east into the city, I figured I'd best check out the suburban steaks. Although I live right across from the 54th street "Belly Fillers", they can be a bit too greasy (as though a cheesesteak shouldn't be..) However, for my money, the best main line cheesesteak to be had is at Molly's Pub on Rt. 30 in Bryn Mawr. Super-fresh rolls, good meat, and even with sauce it's not too soggy.
Submitted by Jan Klincewicz (barbara-johnson@home.com) September 11, 1998

Sorry for the mixup. What I reported as "Molly's" in Bryn Mawr is really "Mallory's" They ARE a bar, and serve up a pretty good shot of Jameson's whiskey, which is probably the cause of my memory loss. For what it's worth, I tried Mama's Pizzeria on Belmont the other day, and it confirmed my number 1 rule. Never order a cheesesteak in a Pizza shop (except for Joe's on 16th St. which is great !!) Not for the usual reason, that they burn the edges of the roll melting the cheese in a pizza oven, but it was bland. Granted, it was a HUGE sandwich, with an abnormally wide fresh loaf of bread for a roll. Unfortunately, the mozz with which they smothered it was bland as tofu, as was the beef. If you're a glutton for quantity, Mama's is worth the $6+ for the ingredients. If you want a cheesesteak to TASTE like something, go elsewhere ... Hail Bop!

MARZELLA'S PIZZA

488 Main Street, Schwenksville, PA PH-(610) 489-4946
I was just made aware of your great site but am surprised to see that no one else has mentioned Marzella's in Collegeville. It's right across the street (Ridge Pike, corner of 4th, I think) from the Ursinus College campus, where I went to undergrad, which is how I became familiar with it. At the time I had only had cheesesteaks from a few other places, mainly in my hometown of Lansdale, but I have since sampled steaks from a wide variety of places, including some that repeatedly get voted best in Philly (Jim's, Pat's, Sonny's), and I still have yet to find an equal to Marzella's. They have found the perfect ratio of roll, meat, cheese, and grease...the milky-orange liquid that drips out and pools on the plate makes a great dipping sauce for the rest of your sandwich. I lived in Virginia for 8 years (where they can't make a real cheesesteak to save their lives) and when I would bring my DC-area friends up to show them around Philly, I always took them out to Collegeville for the cheesesteak leg of the tour, explaining that that's where to find the best cheesesteaks in the whole Philly area. I never had any complaints. Thankfully I moved back to the Philly area in '99, so Marzella's is once again a regular part of my life.

MICHAEL'S UNIQUE SANDWICHES

441 Leverington Ave., Manayunk, PA
D'alesandros receives reviews, but the Manayunk/Roxborough area boasts of another fantastic steak place! Michael's Unique Sandwiches at 441 Leverington Ave. in Manayunk, PA has the best quality steak and vegetables, that I've encountered! Michael, who took over from his dad, is usually the one on the grill, and he has a gift! And the man does not scrimp on piling it on! Whether you're getting a cheesesteak (my personal favorite - green peppers, onions and extra cheese), or a regular cold "sammy" you are in for a treat! You get service with a smile, and a sandwich that will put a smile on your face! It's just up the hill from Main Street Manayunk, so after a day of strolling or shopping, toodle on up there. You will NOT be disappointed! I have since moved away from Manayunk (used to live down the street from my beloved Michael's and I have yet to find a cheesesteak that is even CLOSE to being comparable!) And if you do stop in, tell him Kristin says "hi." Mike is so good, he'll even recognize your voice on the phone if you become a regular!

NUSE'S DELI

Rts. 23 & 10, Morgantown, PA
Being a Twin Valley graduate and current Berks county resident, I can speak for the quality of Nuse's Deli in Morgantown and Talerico's in Boyertown. There are plenty of good cheesesteak places around, but these 2 are great. Both have fresh ingredients, and quality rolls - and they know how to assemble. A couple of other establishments (V&S comes to mind) in the area use way too much meat, which is fine, but it's not really a cheesesteak then. By the way, I have found that Conshohocken bakery makes rolls as good as Amoroso's. A lot of good sub shops (including Nuse's I believe) use Conshohocken's crusty on the outside, soft on the inside, Italian rolls. Submitted by Greg Shumate Reading PA; September 3, 2002

Nuse's Deli serves great hoagies and cheesesteaks. They use the freshes meats and cheeses, and the peppers are the best. The quality is fantastic, and the price is right. A large is about a foot long, and costs under $5.00. Located on the eastern edge of Amish country, just off Exit 22 of the PA Turnpike.

PAT'S KING OF STEAKS

For the best cheesesteaks in Philly, there is no question that you should visit Pat's on 9th & Passyunk. Even though I now live on the Monterey Peninsula in california, I can tell you without a doubt where the best Philly cheese steaks are. The absolute best for the purist is at Pat's on 9th and Federal. It is the original, the best and anything else is an immitation. The bread is great and the environment is perfect. I enjoy them there in a way that is completely irrational.

I would have to say the best "authentic" Philly Cheese steak can be found at Pat's Steaks, located on 9th and Wharton in So. Philly. Some other establishments make excellent sandwiches, but if it's not Pat's, it's not Philly! My college buddies and I would make 3 hour road trips at all times of the day and night just for cheesesteaks, and they all agreed, they like Pat's the best. Try an orginial, but my favorite is a "Provolone with."

I literally grew up at Pat's King of Steaks, 9th & Wharton. Two, but usally three steaks were consumed each day from the first day I got my drivers license at age 16. However, my experience is not limited to Pat's. I would try every neighborhood corner "mom & pop" steak sandwich- hoagie joint I could find over the years. All the usual names and then some places like Milt's, Al's and a joint run by a giant Italian woman who made everything from scratch..I believe she was on a tiny street named Indiana St. Jim's is great, Larry's terrific, Pats & Gino's also excellent, but each different from the other. Philly has spawned some of the Best Food in the World, least of which is the Steak Sandwich, but certainly the best known thruout the U.S.

I agree that Pat's is #1 for cheesesteaks. I've eaten cheesesteaks my whole life and I've found these results: #1 of all time : DJ's in Monocacy.....near Birdsboro - closed their shop about 9 years ago after owner died. Their cheesesteaks had some kind of white American cheese mixed with something else that made the cheese "gooo" into your mouth. This, coupled with the extremely soft bun and whole chipped steak slices made this the reason I had girth as a child. If anyone knows someone that can make me that cheesesteak or get that recipe, big, big $$$$ are in your future. #2 Pat's in Passyunk....in a pledging trip, we were asked to visit here. I need directions to get back! #3 Dante's in Birdsboro, PA.....incredible! The steak melts in your mouth and the cheese is high quality. This is one that you let wrapped for a while and then savor the wait! #4 Nuse's in Morgantown.....TRY THE CHEESESTEAK STROMBOLI!!!!!!!

PHILLY FOOD

Media, PA ph.- (610)-565-4386 or fax at (610)-566-8200

In doing WebCrawler the other night I happened on your page "The Best Philly Cheese Steaks". I grew up with cheese steaks and hoagies; our family owned STACKY'S STEAKS AND HOAGIES in Chester, PA, for more than sixty years. Stacky's gave way to the wrecking ball last month for a new access road to I-95. Anyway, here's good news for those poor souls yearning for that epicurean delight we call a Philly Cheese Steak. Dial-A-Party Catering located in Media, PA, and approximately equidistant from Chester and Philadelphia, has a division they call Philly Food. Philly Food makes cheese steaks and hoagies the way they were intended to be made using fresh Amoroso's rolls and all the best meats, cheese and produce. They wrap the sandwiches in film to keep air out, refrigerate them for a few hours, pack them in insulated containers with ice packs and ship them the same day via FedEx next day air. The lucky recipient just has to heat the steak sandwich in their oven. Hot or sweet peppers and catsup are packed on the side so you can add these condiments to suit your taste. I have sent these gift packs to friends in Florida, Texas and other parts of the country and they've given them rave reviews. Many out of towners have become Philly Food regulars. These packages aren't cheap due to the costly packaging and next day air; about $70 for two jumbo cheese steaks including two bags of Herr's potato chips and two cans of Frank's root beer soda. Other gift packs on Dial-A-Party Catering's Philly Food menu include soft pretzels baked that morning in South Philly, Habbersette Scrapple and a kit containing Maglio's Philly made hot or sweet Italian Sausage and Cacia's Brick Oven baked rolls to make Wildwood, NJ boardwalk style sausage sandwiches. Dial-A-Party Catering isn't on the WEB but they should be; their idea of hi tech is a battery powered calculator. Cheese steak aficionados can reach them by phone at (610) 565-4386 or fax at (610) 566-8200 to request a menu and ordering information.

Just found your site and boy is my mouth watering. JIMS at 63rd &callowhill was great and i didn't know it was still open..i haven't lived in philly for 20 years, but get back 2-3 times a year. i think jims on south street is the best. but historically, larrys across from overbrook high school was absolutely the best and the larrys on 54th street doesn'y come close. in harrisburg, there is a place called philly steaks, i think. it is across from strawberry square, anfd across from the capitol complex. has philly sports atmosphere. and best of all, the cheese steaks are very good. best i've had outside of philly. highly reccommended from somebody who knows and loves cheesestaeks. thanks for getting my taste buds all excited skip from lewistown pa.

PHILLY STYLE PIZZA

11th Street, Philadelphia
After trying as many cheesesteaks as i possibly could in the four years that i have lived here, i have to say the best cheesesteaks are made in a little known place called PHILLY STYLE PIZZA. It's located on 11th street in between Samson and Walnut, right across from Jefferson Hospital. Not only is the steak some of the finest quality meat you can buy, but everything from the Amoroso rolls to any topping you want, is the freshest available. Not to mention the size, each steak fills a hoagie roll to the brim. On Wednesday's they run their special, which is a cheesesteak and a soda for $5. You can't imagine how many Doctor's who preach about a low fat diet are crammed into the place from 11am to 2pm. No wonder they have never advertised.
Thanks, i just wanted to let people know about one of Philly's best kept secrets!

PUDGE'S

Rt. 202, Norristown, PA
A lifelong Philly guy until last March when I moved to Titusville, Fl., I was born and raised on cheesesteaks, literally. I worked in my parents pizza place, Rossi's 2nd & Linton in Olney, in the 50's and 60's. Sure, I can still read the Inky and Daily News on the web. I can watch the Flyers on ESPN and the Iggles on the satellite. There is even a local supermarket that sells Tastykakes!. But there is no real cheesesteak! So whenever I am back in Philly, the first thing I do is head to Pudge's, on Rt. 202 just north of Norristown. Even better than Dalassandro's. A Pudge large cheesesteak reminds me of the old Larry's bellyfiller at 60th & Lancaster, only better! Check Pudge out. I gaurantee you will enjoy it.

I am a nurse anesthetist in the U.S. Navy, currently stationed at the Naval Hospital in Sigonella, Sicily. I am originally from Norristown, PA, and am a loyal Eagles Fan! My favorite place for a cheesesteak is Pudge's, on Dekalb Pike, (which is also north on Rt. 202), just outside of Norristown. The sandwiches are cooked to order, and have generous portions of steak! Whenever I am home on leave, my family knows that we need to order from Pudge's for dinner! Submitted by Nancy Curll, LCDR, NC, USN (sig1nlc@sig10.med.navy.mil), September 5, 1997

RINO'S

Exton, PA
RINO'S IN EXTON,PA - The Super Cheese Steak !! Over a Pound of Suculent Sirlion Sliced and Diced !! with Fresh Provolone on a Fresh Bun !! OR The Large Stomboli Cheese Steak!! It hurts me to think about it. There is no place in my immediate area (30 mi. radius) that has a clue !! Except for my own kitchen, even then it's not the same. Moving away from Philly was the best thing I could have done for weight control! Without a doubt I would be testing all the places listed here.

SCIARRINO'S

Springfield Rd., Springfield, PA; ph)-610-543-8400
In the Philadelphia area, I have found that Sciarrino's makes a pretty good cheesesteak. They are located in Springfield ( right off the Blue Route - 476) off of Springfield Road. I usually get a mushroom cheesesteak with extra American cheese and mayo. Their rolls are very fresh and they do have a very cheesy steak. The meat is sufficient that you don't need extra meat. Try them sometime when you are back in the area.

Shakey Jakes in York, PA makes fantastic steaks! They bake their own rolls (more like a "pocket" than a roll) that taste incredible on their own. They make a pepperoni pizza steak that's the BOMB! It is located on US 30 halfway between PA 74 and I-83.

I've recently had my first cheesesteak from Slacks Hoagie Shack and I must say I'm impressed. A large is $9.50 and its the same 3' size as the hoagies I bring to the games. Not surprisingly, I've had no trouble putting them away:-)

I live in Lancaster, Pa. I hold season tix to the EAGLES. My pre- game routine is leaving Lanc. at 8:00 am then travel to Lee's (not bad)in Phila. I wouldn't mind trying another place, just afraid i'll get lost and miss kick-off.
I own a wholesale fruit and vegetable business (Kegels). I try and support our customers as much as my waistline will allow. Smith's hotel by far beats everyone in this area. Voted Best Cheese Steak and Subs in Lancaster County by the Ledger Newspaper. Jim and Tom Smith sure pack on the meat. A large steak is $4.60.

SONNY'S FAMOUS STEAKS

228 Market St., Philadelphia, PA
You all are missing out... the best by far is Sonny's in old city. right on market near Penn's Landing... cheese steaks, cheese fries, onion rings.... It's inside, which takes away the "roughing it" feel of Pats, but it tastes alot better... bathrooms are clean, and the people there are nice. Why bother going all the way to south philly during a friday night drinking spree??? Just go to Sonnys. Grab a "bite me" shirt, and enjoy. Went there first cuz Pats raised prices and pissed me off... fries, soda and steak used to be 10 bucks even... now its $10.25.... I usually gotta break a $20 now. Sonnys keeps it at $10. Only problem is that it is a bit short on the wiz occasionally... just get extra and u will love it.

SOPHIE'S LUNCH TRUCK

34th & Walnut Sts., Philadelphia, PA
Sophie's Lunch Truck--34th & Walnut Sts., in University City, has been making an awesome pizza steak since at least 1986, when I used to buy them as a freshman at halftime while watching the Eagles each Sunday in my dorm right across the street. Now I'm a law student at Penn, and I still go there almost weekly. They use an Amoroso's roll (or so it seems) and a tender steak, top it with pizza sauce and mozzarella, and bake it for about 3 minutes so the roll is warm and slightly crispy and the cheese is melted and stringy. I love it.

STEAK AND HOAGIE FACTORY

In Abington on 611 near the Willow Grove Mall
I was checking out your site and was shocked to see that Steak and Hoagie factory was nowhere to be found. I know they have 4 places, one in Abington on 611 near the Willow Grove Mall, and another on Street Road in Warminster. Their cheesesteaks are worth checking out...any cheesesteak fan should try one of theirs. I won't say they're better than Pat's, but they're close. Thanks for putting up the site...I'm stuck here in the Portland, Oregon area for the rest of the year and Philadelphia's isn't quite cutting it. It's pretty good for being 3000 miles away from Philly....but it aint the same. Checking out your site reminds me what to look forward to when I come home. Thanks

STEVE'S PRINCE OF STEAKS

7200 Bustleton Ave. (215) 338-0985
There should only be one place on this page - Steve's in NE. Jim's, Geno's, and Pat's are all commercialized tourist attractions. Dellasandro's is completely overrated, and so is Mama's. Steve's!!! Steve's!!! Steve's!!! They are the true taste of Philly and are for those that know how to appreciate a steak! Quality time goes into the steak. It's not a quick assembly line steak like Jim's, Pat's and Geno's. Way to go to the Prince of Steaks!!!
Submitted by Beeseld@aol.com December 15, 2002

Yes Jims, Pats and Geno's are great steaks not to be missed but Steve's Prince of Steaks in the NE is still the best. Steve's also has killer cheese fries.

7200 Bustleton AV (1 block south of Cottman AV) NE Philly
You know nothing about a cheesesteak until you've visited the PRINCE. Steve's Prince Of Steaks that would be. Jim's (well known in the Philly area) opened right up the street from Steve's and is getting destroyed. Once you try a Steve's steak a Jim's tastes like a Steak-Umm!!!!!!!!

Northeast Philly
without a doubt, Steve's Prince of Steaks in the Northeast is the best. The roll is incredible and the meat is even better. Nobody makes them like Steve's. p.s. - Jim's down the street is getting clobbered because they can't compete with Steve's.

Stoxy's is on Oxford ave, around the 7300 block, just before you get to Rockledge. It sits on a triangle piece of property and is sort of old fashioned. You can pull up and there's a counter where you can eat at. They make big steaks with lots of meat and there open 'til around 3 in the morning. They also make real milk shakes that are great. Inside there are also lots of pictures of classic cars hanging on the walls. The people are nice too!!

TALARICO'S

Philadelphia Avenue, Boyertown, PA
John, we looked at your cheesesteak list. We were very disappointed that you did not list Talarico's located on Philadelphia Avenue in Boyertown, Pennsylvania. Not only are they the most delicious cheesesteaks that you will ever eat, their hoagies are equally delicious. Nothing but the freshest ingredients are used in these sandwiches. If you visit Pop Talarico's establishment you will be included in their rogues gallery.
Submitted by Bonnie Russ, July 9, 1997

Being a Twin Valley graduate and current Berks county resident, I can speak for the quality of Nuse's Deli in Morgantown and Talerico's in Boyertown. There are plenty of good cheesesteak places around, but these 2 are great. Both have fresh ingredients, and quality rolls - and they know how to assemble. A couple of other establishments (V&S comes to mind) in the area use way too much meat, which is fine, but it's not really a cheesesteak then. Greg Shumate Reading PA; September 3, 2002

THE PEPPER MILL

Rt. 352 in West Chester, PA (696-0100)
I came across your site, and boy am I homesick! The Pepper Mill on 352 in West Chester, PA (696-0100) has one of the best cheesesteaks ever!! Their premier cheesesteak is without a doubt the greatest sandwich ever created! They also have a wide variety of other killers hoagies (their chicken salad is awesome too) and such. Born in Philly, and lived there for 23 years I get homesick when I just think of home. Now I live in Grand Junction, Colorado and there are nothing but Subways and Quiznos (YUCK!!), even WAWA's seem like a dream.

THE ITALIAN KITCHEN

521 E. Baltimore Pike, Upper Darby, Pa.

Growing up I Phila. I have had my share of famous name cheesesteaks. As a kid, living in West Philly, I started with Jim's Steaks on 62nd street. Later, working construction in Roxbourgh, I spend many a noon hour at Delassandro's. And who in Philly hasn't eaten at Pat's or Geno's. But, the best steak shop around has to be The Italian Kitchen on Baltimore Pike. The steaks at the Italian Kitchen are fabulous. The tender meat is piled high on Amoroso rolls and is cooked to perfection. My career has taken me all over the United States, but whenever I go back to Yeadon to visit my Mom, my first stop is The Italian Kitchen.

TONY LUKE'S Old Philly Style Sandwiches

39 East Oregon Ave., Philadelphia PH.-215-551-5725

- When you need a great sammich near the Sports Complex, look no further than the infamous Tony Luke's. Located just a few blocks away on Front and Oregon, this place will satisfy your cheesesteak craving before or after any Philly sporting event. Photos of celebrities adorn the walls, and they even have their own "Walk of Fame" stars on the floor honoring famous South Philadelphians. Also famous for their Chicken Cheesesteaks and famous Roast Pork which is to die for. Whether you're an Eagles, Flyers, Sixers, or Phillies fan, this is the place to go near the Sports Complex!

EDITOR'S CHOICE!

Move over Holy Trinity of Philly Steakdom, there needs to be room made for a fourth. What Geno's, Pat's and Jim's all share in location, location and location, they also all lack one thing in common- proximity to the Sports Complex. Enter Tony Luke's, the best damn tailgating cheesesteak this side of "American Wit" oblivion. In addition to having many great menu items, their cheesesteak is sooooo good that ripping through one in record time does not produce heartburn. Recently I was running late for a Flyers-Bruins game, so a classic Tony-Luke's steak had to be inhaled before the puck was dropped. No side effects incurred after devouring it in about 2 minutes. Juicy, tender, and cheesy- just how a steak should be, Tony Luke's gets my vote for Best of Philly.
Submitted by Tim Powell, January 16, 2003

No matter where my friends and I are at any time, when we get hungry we always find ourselves on 95 heading for Tony Lukes. The cheesesteaks are amazing; the provolone is the sharpest in the city, and they always seem to have "just out of the oven" fresh rolls...even at 2 in the morning. The only downside is that they also have the best Pork, Roast Beef and Chicken Cutlets in the city too, so the choice can sometimes be trying. BY The Way---- Congrats on your mention in the BEST OF PHILLY issue of Philadelphia Magazine.

TONY'S PLACE

Poconos- Rt. 309, Jim Thorpe, PA ph.-(717)-325-4558
Just checked out your website and realized that it is not complete without our place listed on the Cheesesteak list. "Tony's Place, Home of the Best Cheesteaks in the Poconos" My father opened the restaurant 7 years ago upon moving to the Poconos and realizing that there was no place around to get good food. We make them exactly like my Nonna (Italian for Grandmother) used to. We use an 18 inch fresh baked Italian roll and 3/4 of a pound of Rib Eye steak. Rarely does someone eat the entire thing, and we sell it for only $5.95. As this is mainly a tourist area, most of our customers are from Philly/New York/New Jersey. We are continually amazed at the number of people that come in, order a couple, and say "Could you wrap them up good, I'm bringing them back to Philly with me, my friends don't believe how good they are." We are located on Rt. 903, 8 miles above Jim Thorpe. Right in between Pocono Whitewater Rafting/Skirmish, and Big Boulder Ski Area.

VIVARINA'S

1900 block Porter St., Philadelphia
I once thought Primo's was the best place to get a hoagie in South Philly, but that was until I tasted a Vivarina's hoagie, located between 20th and 19th on Porter Street. After being open for only one year Vivarina's won Best of Philly because of their italian hoagie and won Best New Hoagie in Philly because of their Santa Fe. The Santa Fe is the best hoagie I have ever tasted and is already their most popular hoagie. Primo's may now have a rival. For any hoagie eaters this is a place you should stop in at least once. WAWA

Ardmore, PA
Someone told me that the best cheesesteak they ever had was in Ardmore, PA at a Wawa, of all places. I've never seen a grill in any Wawa except for this one, but apparently the guys who work at this place whip up a mean sammich. Perhaps it's because deys gots fresh rolls. Have to try it... maybe you should do. The place is located, again, in Ardmore, right off of Lancaster Avenue, in a small strip of shops behind the big-ass green bank (First Union?). Those directions vague enough for ya?
Submitted by Mickey Lynch (mickey_lynch@mbcnet.com,) July 22, 1996

Unfortunately, the Ardmore WaWa removed its grill over the past summer. As many college students on the main line found out, the best cheesesteak in Philly was actually made at a WaWa, and could be made to order at all hours of the night! The best was from the night manager Ron. My friends and I would go in at 2 in the morning and walk up to the counter and say,"Give me a Ronsteak with extra cheese, fried onions, and ketchup". It was heavenly, but alas, it is no more. Now I must say the best cheesesteak is at Pat's.
