AL'S STEAK HOUSE

EDITOR'S CHOICE!

1504 Mt. Vernon Ave., Alexandria, VA (ph)-703-836-9443
OK folks, I've finally found a spot here in Northern Virginia that is worthy of your cheesesteak dollar! I've tried a lot of places around here, but none of them were worthy of an Editor's Choice Award... until I found Al's. Al's Steak House in Alexandria is by far the best Cheesesteak I've found here in the DC metro area. When I don't have the time to make the two-hour trip north back to Philly, I am now able to cruise into Alexandria and grab me one helluva sammich at Al's. The rolls are as good as you'll find in this area, (not quite Amoroso's quality, but the best I've had in this area), and the steak is real good in quantity and quality. A large is huge and is appropriately cut into four ample sections. If you like green peppers, order the Green Pepper steak. Oh yeah, the fries are a must too! One side note, Al's closes at 8:00 pm, 7:00 on Saturdays, so order early.

DAN'S PHILADELPHIA DELI

If you need a taste of authentic Philadelphia while down south in Lynchburg, VA, check out Dan's Phila Deli, serving up an extensive menu of fine Philly cheese steaks, Hoagies and sandwiches. They use only fresh baked rolls for all sandwiches. Catering services also available. They are located in the Boonsboro Shopping Ctr, which is in north Lynchburg off US 501.

MALEK'S PIZZA

Springfield Plaza, Old Keene Mill Rd., Springfield, VA PHONE: (703)-451-6969
If you're in Springfield and need a late night cheesesteak, Malek's will do. While the bread is not up to Philly standards by any means, Malek's is open late every night and taste pretty darn good after a night of drinking and debauchery. They deliver up until 3am on weekends!

MR. M's PHILLY STEAKS & GYROS

151 E. Little Creek Road (Wards Corner) Norfolk, VA; PHONE: (757)-480-7827
Mr. M's Philly Steaks & Gyros at 151 E. Little Creek Road (Wards Corner) Norfolk, VA. has the best Philly Steaks in town. They are generally cheaper and faster than most of the other sub shops in town. They also offer delivery to NOB and the area surrounding Wards Corner. You can call your order in advance at 757-480-7827. Believe me it is worth it.

MR. SUBMARINE

Richmond, VA - multiple locations
This Greek shop with the distinctive red and white awning-stripe roof beckons steak lovers with the ever-present "$4.95 Cheesesteak" sign. The sandwich you get for your nominal investment is worthy of repeat visits. The bread holds grease well, never letting it soak to the outside, but holding plenty for the chin-drip that is essential to a proper dining experience. The meat is finely chopped and has a unique seasoning for a cheesesteak. Slightly more . . . herby, but it definitely works. The cheese is sliced provolone, not Whiz, but its a small concession and one you won't regret permitting. This is not the biggest sub roll you will ever find, but they use every square inch of it to hold the delectable prize. What a real steak ought to be!

NOVUS

Fork Unoin, VA
MY HUSBAND IS FROM NEW JERSEY AND I AM FROM VA. HE IS ALWAYS LOOKING FOR A GOOD CHEESE STEAK AND WE THINK WE HAVE FOUND IT. TRY NOVUS IN FORK UNION VA. THIS LITTLE OUT OF THE WAY ITALIAN RESTAURANT IS MMMMM MMMMMM GOOD!!!! THE PROBLEM MOST PLACES HAVE DOWN SOUTH WITH GOOD CHEESE STEAKS ARE THE ROLLS AND WE THINK DAVE - OWNER OF NOVUS HAS COME THE CLOSEST OF ANY PLACE IN VA. HIS OTHER FOOD IS PRETTY GOOD ALSO! SO, IF YOU ARE DOWN THIS WAY TRY IT, YOU MIGHT LIKE IT!! THE ONLY PROBLEM WE FIND WITH NOVUS IS THEIR ROLLS ARE ABOVE HALF THE SIZE OF REAL PHILLY ROLLS BUT IT IS CHEAPER THAN DRIVING ALL THE WAY TO PHILLY.(HA HA) BILL AND SHIRLEY RICHMOND VA

PHILADELPHIA MIKE'S

13969 Metrotech Dr, Chantilly, VA PHONE: (703) 961-9762
Philadelphia Mike's in Chantilly satisfies in quantity and quality. They also are one of the rare places in the Washington metro area that actually have sweet peppers. If only they used Amoroso's rolls... the roll is their one weakness. Bonus points for the Philly photos on the walls, although I am disappointed that there are no Eagles pennants, undoubtedly due to the fact that they are only a few miles away from Redskins Park.

PHILLY STYLE STEAKS & SUBS

7456 Tidewater Drive in Norfolk, Va.
The best place in the Norfolk-Virginia Beach area to get a cheesesteak is Philly Style Steaks & Subs at 7456 Tidewater Drive in Norfolk. The owners are from Philly and they have all kinds of Flyers and other Philadelphia teams newspaper clippings and stuff on the walls. I've eaten lots of cheesesteaks around here and they are definitely the best. Thanks.

SPORTS CHEESESTEAK & HOAGIE SHOP

12518 Gordon Blvd, Woodbridge, VA 22192 PH: (703)-491-5604
I’ve tried about ½ dozen of the ones listed in VA, Sport’s is the best of all the ones I tried.

Just wanted to let you know of a great steak I found Woodbridge/Occoquan,VA. It's called Sportshop on Rt 123, Gordon BV. I migrated from Philly 9 years ago. The sport shop is the closest I've found with a great steak. I used to work at Bustleton Square Pizza in Northeast Philly and cooked a mean pizza steak. This is the best I've found since being here. A 6 inch is $6.50 and a 12 is $11.50. Good stuff for Virginia. Joe Flynn. GO EAGLES!!!

THE BROILER

3601 Columbia Pike Arlington, VA 22204-4259 ph.-(703-920-5944)
The best cheese steaks I have ever had are at The Broiler on Columbia Pike in Arlington VA. The onions, steak, and cheese are grilled to perfection and they come with lettuce, tomato and mayo. I much prefer them to the "Philly Style" that only have steak and cheese. Too bland for me.

THE CORNER DELI

100 N. James Madison Hwy., Remington, Va. (540) 439-2828
I was born in Port Richmond and raised in Kensington and the Far Northeast and I now live in Warrenton in rural Virginia. It was a pleasant surprise several years ago when "The Corner Deli" opened up in nearby Remington. It's since become a popular spot for good food. The owners serve an authentic Philly hoagie and cheesesteak (not a "steak and cheese" as they call them down here). The food is mouth-watering and if blindfolded you would think you were back in the City of Brotherly Love. Remington is about 60 miles West of Washington, DC, and is located off U.S. Route 29 heading South toward Charlottesville, VA.

ZERO'S

Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Newport News - multiple locations
Zero's is a "clean" steak by most standards, with a roll big enough to catch all the drippings and grease normally oozing through your fingers. At any rate, they make up in taste and quality what they lack in messiness. Never has so good-looking a sandwich been so darned tasty. The meat is juicy, the gooey cheese perfectly folded into the steak and the onions always grilled perfectly.
